Chesterfield Public Schools launches new mobile web app

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - School closings and delays at your fingertips! Chesterfield County Schools launched a new mobile web app to connect parents to the most crucial information they need at a moment's notice!

This isn't something you buy at an "app" store. It's free and with a few simple steps, information like school alerts and news feeds can be on your smart phone.

On the playground, Julie Batt watches her seven year old like a hawk. When the first grader is away in his classroom, Batt's smart phone is within arm's reach.

"I keep it usually on vibrate so I know something is going on very quickly, and it's the way of the world these days with technology," said Batt.

This week, Chesterfield Schools launched a new mobile web app. It's the latest edition to the system's effort that began three years ago to enhance its online services.

"Hot topics, major topics, news tips."

The app is a condensed version of the school's web site designed in-house at no cost to taxpayers.

"Mobile web app takes the most important timely information puts it in one place easily accessible from a mobile device or tablet. It's very timely it's updated every single day," said Chesterfield Schools Spokesman, Shawn Smith.

It offers alerts, news feeds and contact information for schools and administrators.

Smith said the mobile web app is just one more way to connect with parents who already rely heavily on the school system's Facebook and Twitter updates.

"We want to be available where the people are getting their information," said Smith.

Batt said she'd rather check her smart phone than fumble around on the internet during severe weather to find out about school closings or delays.

If the power goes out and her phone is charged she and other parents will have access to that critical information.

"A lot of parents, that's their way of accessing information, whether at work or out with their friends or family, if it's instantaneous people checking their phones usually every half hour," said Batt.

You can download the free app by following the step-by-step instructions on the Chesterfield Schools web page at
