"Complacent" Kickers start 20th season

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The Kickers 20th season begins Saturday, but coach Leigh Cowlishaw is not a happy man. Cowlishaw says he hasn't been happy with the effort that his team has shown in the preseason, and used the word "complacent" to describe his players.

The Kickers are coming off one of their most successful season in team history, making the semifinals of both the U.S. Open Cup and the USL Pro League playoffs.

But Cowlishaw says the team may be resting too much on the laurels of last season, as they've had a lackluster effort in their exhibition games against local college teams.

Cowlishaw, and new assistant coach and starting goalie Ronnie Pascale, both said Friday they're hoping that playing in front of a good crowd Saturday will help to wake the players up.

Most of last year's team is returning this season, and they've added a talented scorer, Jason Yeisley, to the mix for 2012.

Kickoff is at 5pm on Saturday at City Stadium against the Charleston Battery.  The Kickers will be wearing their retro green jerseys with the new logo for the first time.
