New DMV mobile application should ease wait times

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The Virginia DMV has launched a new Android app to help make visits a little more pleasant and cut down on wait times.

There are several services offered, including: a map of the wait times at all DMV locations, and options to make transactions through an online account. Renewing a license, changing an address, replacing a title, and buying a license plate are also on that list.

"Also if you can complete one of those two-dozen transactions through your app, then you don't have to come to the DMV," said spokesperson Melanie Stokes. "That makes folks who have more complicated transactions, like original licenses, wait less"

Through the app, drivers can tap their locations and get driving directions, or call the office directly, another way to help people get on with their day quickly.

"It's huge," said Dean Rhee. "I moved here from Maryland. Lines were long there. They're better in Virginia. Anything to make them even better than that."

Instead of waiting in line, people can also buy specialty license plates and use an interactive feature to see what's available. The app also lists an RSS feed with news alerts, office closures and other details that may help ease with time at the DMV.

So far nearly 1,100 people have downloaded the app since it launched on the Android Market, recently renamed Google Play.

The DMV is currently making a similar app for the iPhone and iPad. To download the app, search for VADMV on your Android phone. The best part is, it's free.
