Charles City deputy remembered

CHARLES CITY, VA (WWBT) – Deputy Michael Walizer died just down the street from the Sheriff's Office.

It's a painful site for the few remaining deputies and just about everyone in the area of Charles City County.

The father of four is a man so many knew and so many miss terribly.

A cross now sits just down the hill from a giant teddy bear.

Friends and family stop by the place marking Deputy Michael Walizer's final moments of life to pray and to remember the man they love.

"His wife would like for me to express his commitment to his family, community and God," said Sheriff Javier Smith.

There are already more than 100 notes on an online Officer Down Memorial page, including the dispatcher, Tracy Pace, who handled Walizer's last call.

"He was an amazing deputy, family man, and friend," said Pace. "He may be gone in body but his spirit will remain in the hearts of all that knew and loved him."

A balloon with Walizer's cruiser number flies steadily in the breeze, a reminder of a beloved father and friend.

While Charles City County cars sit still, the New Kent County brothers and sisters in uniform take to the roads, working overtime and through vacation to give those from Walizer's office time to grieve.

"We hope that someone would do the same for us and we want Charles City to be able to take the time that they need to cope with their situation," said Sergeant R.B. Jenkins.

"Immediately we got responses from more than enough officers to come over and help Charles City," said Sheriff F.W. Howard, Jr.

New Kent County will bear the financial cost of staffing two counties, but they point out, the true loss is felt in the heart of Charles City County.

"Our hearts just go out to them, especially the families and their department in general," said Sheriff Howard.

Sheriff Smith says he can't keep up with the outpouring of support from across the state.

We're told Petersburg's Sheriff's Office may step in and help with law enforcement in court next week.

Virginia State Police are helping New Kent County with daily responsibilities.

A funeral date has not yet been set for Deputy Sheriff Walizer.
