RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – Folks in a south Richmond neighborhood say they caught the mailman throwing their mail in the trash. And they have the pictures to prove it.
They've been having problems with mail delivery for months now, but it all came to a head late last week when one woman saw her carrier lift up a trash can lid and throw all of the mail he was carrying inside.
These are pictures from a cell phone- mail, taken last week by a resident who asked not to be identified. She found mail piled up in a trash can. You can clearly see - it's not even junk mail. Its letters destined not just for Broadrock, but for Holly Springs, Maury Street, and Logandale Avenue.
"Package notifications, insurance cards, mail from the city, bills, people utility bills, internet cable bills; there were a lot of things in there," said Ebony Shepperson. "There's no telling what else was thrown away. This guy has to be exposed."
She and other neighbors noticed their mail wasn't delivered or even picked up for days at a time. The problems began a few months ago, after a new carrier took over their route. Now they believe- they know what's been going on.
"It didn't surprise me. I've been looking for it, but just so happen somebody else caught him. I didn't see it, but I'm glad he got caught," said Roseelaa Patterson-Bradley.
Roseelaa says she's had important mail never reach its destination.
"I have a check that's missing since January to the car insurance place. Has never reached there. Where is it?" said Roseelaa.
"What can you do if you can't even trust your personal information going out the door," Shepperson added.
So far no arrests have been made. The folks who live here tell us they've noticed a new postal carrier on their route this week.
The Office of Inspector General says special agents are investigating the case. Destroying or stealing people's mail is a federal offense punishable by up to five years in prison.
