State Senate passes budget

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – Democrats in the State Senate were reluctant to pass a budget until they got some concessions in their power struggle with the GOP. They did not get control of any committees, but they did get some of the things they were looking for in the spending plan.

Democrats got their GOP colleagues to agree to add funding for senior citizens and child care and to help people who were in danger of being foreclosed upon. They also help to restore a cut to teen pregnancy prevention programs. But they didn't get everything.

They lost an attempt to add funding to help agencies and women seeking abortions to get the state to pay for the now mandatory pre-abortion ultrasound. Despite a vigorous floor debate, that did not prevent the entire budget from moving forward.

But this is not the end of this debate. Now both the House and Senate will come together to hash out the differences in their plans. The final budget will still need the governor's approval. It all must be complete by June 1st.
