RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A Petersburg man convicted of taking more than 9,000 artifacts from a Civil War battlefield will spend one year and one day in a federal prison.
52 year-old John Jeffrey Santo also must pay $7,346 restitution to the battlefield for damage caused by his excavations.
According to the Progress-Index, U.S. District Court sentenced Santo on Wednesday.
Items recovered from Santo's home included 8,515 bullets, 47 fuses and 11 shells and cannonballs.
Santo pleaded guilty last December to two counts of damaging archaeological resources.
