HANOVER, VA (WWBT) - An area firefighter is accused of sex crimes with a minor.
Ryan Nugent, 24, faces a number of charges, including indecent exposure, trespassing and having sexual intercourse with a teenager.
The prosecutor handling the case said a resident spotted Nugent and the minor — who's at least 15 years of age — naked in somebody's backyard. Police were called, and sex charges were filed.
Nugent has served as a volunteer firefighter with Hanover County's Black Creek division for six months. Now, he could serve time behind bars.
It's unclear who tipped police off to the alleged crime or where it may have happened. Police say the alleged victim and Nugent were in a so-called relationship.
No one at Nugent's home answered the door for comment.
Neighbors had plenty to say about Nugent. They all said the same thing — Nugent was often seen skateboarding or walking the neighborhood with groups of young female teens.
Neighbor Chasity Gray said she's not surprised by the charges.
"I thought he was younger so we minded our business, but I thought something was weird," said Gray.
The alleged crime happened last week — Gray witnessed the arrest.
"I saw spotlights all up on my porch and I looked out the window and that's when I saw the police. It's not the first time we've seen police come get him."
NBC12 legal analyst Steve Benjamin is not affiliated with the case. He said, bottom line, it's illegal, consensual or not, for an adult to have sex with a minor.
"It doesn't matter if the minor said they were 18 or older. It doesn't matter if the adult believes they're 18 or older. You cannot have sex with a minor and if you do it's a crime."
Nugent has been suspended from the Hanover County Fire Department pending the outcome of his case.
Nugent was taken to Riverside Regional Jail.
He's due back in court on Wednesday.
