Richmond, VA (WWBT)- Shaka Smart has put together three successful years at the head of the VCU bench, putting together an 84-27 record and guiding the Rams to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments, which included a Final Four run. This success has made Smart an attractive target for teams looking to fill coaching vacancies at other schools.
Illinois is expected to make a run at Smart. The Rams' head coach has ties to the area and the Fighting Illini are willing to give him a significant pay raise, according to multiple published reports out of Illinois. Smart, however, has said during various interviews that he and his family are happy in Richmond, but hasn't publicly stated that he would be at VCU next year.
Smart has an 18-4 postseason record, 6-2 in the NCAA Tournament, and led VCU to a CAA title after losing four starters from his Final Four team. He triggered bonuses in his contract this season by winning the conference championship, beating Richmond and winning an NCAA Tournament game. All of the numbers make Smart an ideal candidate for any team looking for a new head coach.
