HENRICO, VA (WWBT) – There's a new intersection atop the list of Henrico's most crash-prone locations.
West Broad Street at Brookriver Drive in Short Pump recorded 40 crashes in 2011, according to the Top 10 Accident Locations as reported by Henrico Police. That's one crash for every 483,000 vehicles in the area.
West Broad Street at Gaskins Road came in second with 34 crashes in 2011. Rounding out the top five were: West Broad Street at Glenside Drive (32 crashes), West Broad Street at Pump/Pouncey Tract Roads (28), and Mechanicsville Turnpike at Crump Street (27).
Lt. A.J. Gordon is with the Henrico Police traffic safety unit. He says many of the crashes are the result of distracted driving.
"It could be related to cell phone usage. It could be related to somebody eating in the car, could be related to talking to other passengers in the car, or just not paying attention to surroundings," Gordon said.
Gordon says police and VDOT review the information multiple times a year before considering improvements to the design of the intersections, or educational initiatives.
"We just want people to pay attention to the driving and pay attention to what's going on in front of them," Gordon said.
