Eric P. Melzig, M.D., completed his residency in General Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University's Medical College of Virginia in 1977. He has been practicing general surgery in Richmond since residency at Richmond Surgical.
Dr. Melzig practices the full spectrum of general surgery, and has enormous experience in minimally invasive surgical techniques. His specialties include parathyroid and thyroid surgery, imaging and surgery for diseases of the breast, laparoscopic surgery and surgical oncology to include the management of pancreatic, colo-rectal and melanoma malignancies.
As the recipient of the 2007 Sharon H. Kohlenberg Award by the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation, Dr. Melzig has been recognized for his deep commitment to fighting breast cancer. Compassionate and innovative treatments are delivered to his breast cancer patients with the assistance of his nurse, Barbara Ross-Cersley. He was voted by his peers as one of Richmond Magazine's Top Docs in Richmond 2010.
Dr. Melzig has championed minimally invasive parathyroid surgery. The rapid analysis PTH assay technology required to do minimally invasive parathyroid surgery was obtained by Henrico Doctors' Hospital due to his efforts.
When not in the operating room or seeing patients in his office, Dr. Melzig enjoys family and golf. Traveling to spend time with children and grandchildren has become a favorite hobby.
