Tickets to NCAA Tournament aren't cheap for VCU fans

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The VCU Rams take on the Wichita State Shockers Thursday night in Portland, Oregon.

Some fans are already making their travel plans to see the players in action. This trip doesn't come cheap. Students and alumni are excited to see the Rams go to the tournament for the second year in a row.

This week, students are on Spring Break. Some loyal fans will spend their break traveling across the country to cheer on their team. Many students may hit the beach, but others will fill the bleachers and cheer on their team.

At $81 a ticket, Carleeda Green says it's it too much on a budget. Add a plane ticket and a hotel room, you're in the ball park of about $1,000.

For some people, that doesn't matter. Right now, AAA is offering a package that includes a ticket to the game and a hotel room for $400. At this point in the game, travel agents say, planning any trip just a few days in advance is pricey but still possible.

"Don't be deterred by the last minute," said AAA Travel Agent, Shawn Cordle. "If you're a big fan and you have to get there, we will get you there."

If VCU makes it to the Sweet 16, AAA will have even more packages available. Cordle's advice is to allow yourself enough time to make it to the game.

"I would definitely plan to get to the venue a day ahead just in case your flight is delayed. You don't want to get excited and spend all this money to go if something happens, then miss the game."

This time around, the tournament won't be in VCU's backyard, but Carleeda Green doesn't doubt some die-hard fans will still travel nearly 3,000 miles to cheer on the team.

"That's expensive," said Green. "That's a lot of money. I think some fans will still make it out there. VCU has some loyal fans."

AAA says it's possible with just a little bit of planning and flexibility. You don't have to be a AAA member to buy a package deal. AAA and other travel agencies will most likely offer other travel packages if VCU makes it to the Sweet 16.
