Petersburg, Amelia fall in state title games

Richmond, VA (WWBT)- Petersburg and Amelia both entered Friday with a chance to lock up state championships, but at the end of the night, both teams came out on the short end.

Petersburg took the court for the Group AAA championship having not won a title since 1974, and faced Hampton for the title.  The Crabbers would jump out to a lead and hold a 27-22 advantage at halftime, but the Crimson Wave would charge back and tie the game in the third.  Hampton, however, used a big fourth quarter to pull away and earn the 64-51 win.  Anthony Barber led the Crabbers with 21 points.  Frank Mason scored a game-high 28 in the loss.

Amelia took on Galax in the Group A Division I state championship game, but would face a tough Maroon Tide squad.  The Raiders trailed by ten at the break and by 15 after three quarters before falling to Galax, 66-49.  This marked the Raiders' first ever appearance in the state title game.
