Henrico crews battle two overnight fires

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - A teen catches fire and a family is displaced after two separate fires in Henrico.

The first fire happened just after 11:00 Thursday night in the 8200 block of New Market Heights Lane in Varina. The family living there saw fire coming from the stove, tried to use water from the kitchen sink to put it out, but it got too big for them to handle.

When fire crews got there, black smoke could be seen coming from the front of the house. Firefighters tell us they had to deal with heavy flames in the kitchen and living room. The fire also spread into the attic.

The family was able to get out unharmed. The Red Cross is helping them this morning.

Around the same time, Henrico fire crews rescued a teen who was on fire. The call for help came from the 3700 block of Pemberton Avenue just off East Laburnum near Mechanicsville Turnpike.

Firefighters tell us an 18-year-old man's clothes caught on fire. They found him in the front yard of a home with burns to his chest and face.

He's now at VCU Medical Center where he's in critical condition. Fire crews don't know how his clothes caught on fire, but they are looking into how it started.
