HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Plans are underway to bring another Wal-mart to Henrico's West End.
If the contract goes through, we're told the Walmart would be at Reynolds Crossing near Glenside Drive and Forest Avenue.
The plan has residents in the nearby Charles Glen neighborhood concerned. Neighbors say they always knew the property would be developed. They say a big box store like Walmart, just doesn't fit.
We checked in with the developers, Reynolds Properties. They say nothing is official just yet, but they confirm Walmart is under contract to buy the property.
"You'd see the façade of the building," Jeffry Burden, a resident in the area, described to our cameras. "It would be something that would be right up close to the property line there and would be kind of a looming presence in the neighborhood here."
Neighbors say the problem isn't development, it's what is developed.
"This is an opportunity to do something special," said Burden. "What can we work with the developers to put in here that's going to be something different, something brings something to the area, something that fits in the area?"
When we spoke to one of the developers on the phone, he told us this Walmart may be just what residents are looking for. He says it will look different from those super centers you're used to seeing.
He says the store they're talking about will be smaller, high end, and focused mostly on groceries. They hope the building's look will be in keeping with neighboring buildings.
No vote is needed to approve the sale. As long as the retail business, in this case Wal-mart, meets the requirements outlined by the zoning ordinance.
Neighbors in the Charles Glen area have a meeting on the subject scheduled for 7 p.m. at Crestview Elementary.
