Memorial Regional Medical Center looking to expand

MECHANICSVILLE, VA (WWBT) - Memorial Regional Medical Center in Hanover County is about to get bigger.

The hospital announced it's looking to expand - and it wants your help deciding how to do it.

This is one of the few hospitals between Fredericksburg and Richmond. The population in this area has grown quite a bit in recent years and Bon Secours says it wants this hospital to keep up.

Finding a parking spot at Memorial Regional Medical Center isn't always easy. It's clear this hospital is bursting at the seams. Now it's looking to expand.

Andrew Cridlin grew up across the street from the hospital. He says he'd like to see more services added at Memorial Regional so he doesn't have to leave town for treatment.

"They could add facilities that they don't really have and could use," Cridlin said. "I think Hanover could use a hospital that has the same equipment as ones downtown."

Dougal Hewitt works at Bon Secours. He says this expansion is just part of keeping up with demand in the area.

"We anticipated there would be growth," Hewitt said. "We just didn't anticipate it would be so much and so fast."

He says right now there are 225 beds at Memorial Regional and that number will soon go up. He says it's up to the public to decide how many beds are added and which other services will soon be provided.

"There's a growing need for cancer care in this community that we see," he said. "There's a growing need for improved breast health services so there are all sorts of services we see in the community."

Maria Duffie also lives across the street from the hospital. She says she'd like to see more urgent care provided - even if that means more traffic and noise in her neighborhood.

"It could lead to a problem with traffic or noise," Duffie said. "But I think though the greater good is more important than a little noise in my neighborhood."

The first public info session will be at the hospital next Monday, starting at 5 o'clock.

The hospital is located at 8260 Atlee Road off Interstate 295.

Bon Secours will release its plans next Friday.
