Richmond, VA (WWBT)- Richmond freshman guard Kendall Anthony has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year for the 2012 season. He becomes just the second Spider in history to win the honor, as Kevin Anderson also won it back in 2008.
Anthony proved to be a key member of the Spiders immediately. He was the second-leading scorer on the roster, posting 13.4 points per game and scored in double figures in 22 of Richmond's 31 regular season games. Anthony posted four 20-plus point performances during the season and was a four-time A-10 Rookie of the Week honoree. He currently ranks fourth in the league in both three-point percentage (43.3%) and three-pointers per game (2.2).
Senior center Darrius Garrett was also honored by the conference, earning a spot on the All-Defensive team. The defensive standout owns each of Richmond's block records, having set the single-game (14), single-season (104) and career (228) swats over the course of his illustrious four year career. The Raleigh native has skied for a team-best 3.3 blocks per game this season, which ranks second in the league, while also leading the team with 6.5 rebounds in 2011-12.
Anthony, Garrett and the Spiders open up Atlantic 10 Tournament play on Tuesday as they head to LaSalle for first round action. Richmond is 16-15 overall, 7-9 in conference play, and is the tenth seed in the tournament. The Explorers are the seventh seed and the winner moves onto the conference semifinals on Friday in Atlantic City.
