VCU aims for CAA crown, NCAA bid

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - VCU has another chance to go dancing. The Rams are playing Drexel for the CAA championship tonight at 7:00 p.m. If they win, the team punches its own ticket the NCAA tournament.

Drexel is the regular season champion, and VCU is the conference's second seed. The loser of tonight's game will sit squarely on the NCAA tournament bubble.

This is a little like de ja vu for VCU. Last year, the Rams went into the CAA championship thinking they needed to win to get into the NCAA tournament. They lost to old dominion 70-65 and then had to wait on pins and needles on selection Sunday. A win tonight would keep them from having to do that this year.

Shaka Smart has plenty of accomplishments in his 3 years at VCU, but he doesn't have a CAA championship. Neither does Drexel.
