Crook steals computer from hotel, case featured on new site

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - His face is clear in the surveillance pictures. The crook behind a brazen theft at a Chester hotel. But police need your help putting him behind bars.

The man walked in to the Hyatt Place on Kingston Avenue on a busy Sunday and walked out with something that wasn't his. It was all caught on tape. He was in and out of the hotel guest business center in roughly five minutes.

When he thought no one was looking.

"He just seemed as if he didn't have any care in the world," said Detective Adrian Otero with Chesterfield Police.

The crook took everything, the monitor, keyboard and even the tower and covered it all up with a towel. He then made his way out to the nearest exit, caught on camera on the way out. He made no effort to hide his face and barely covered the electronics he stole.

It was late January on a busy Sunday.

"Just very odd that no one happened to see him leave the building with all of this equipment," said Det. Otero.

Det. Otero said there was limited staff on hand.

"After showing the picture, the employee did not believe the person was a resident or was staying at the hotel at that time," said Det. Otero.

His close ups have been featured on the fairly new Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Crime Solvers web page "Not Seen On TV."

The site is reserved for illegal actions that don't make crime of the week.

"We often put cases that aren't as high in dollar value, but still have very good high quality pictures," said Det. Otero.

This crook targeted what at the time wasn't secure. A computer worth between $1200 and $1400.

The hotel has made some security changes. Computers in the business center are now bolted down. But the fear is he'll do the same thing at another hotel or bump up his game.
