RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - VCU blew open a halftime tie, to knock out Northeastern and survive in the CAA Tournament. The 2nd-seeded Rams topped the 7th-seeded Huskies 75-65 Saturday in the quarterfinals at the Coliseum.
Rob Brandenberg scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half and Treveon Graham had 10 of his 16 after the break Saturday night to blow open what was a 26-26 tie at the break. Graham and Brandenberg helped the VCU bench outscore the NU bench 46-4.
Bradford Burgess added 10 points as the second-seeded Rams (26-6) won for the 23rd time in their last 26 games. They forced 25 turnovers that turned into 25 points.
Joel Smith and Quincy Ford led the Huskies (14-17) with 17 points each and Jonathan Lee had 16.
The Rams, who led by as many as 21, started the second half with a 10-2 burst, and later had an 11-0 run that gave them a 64-43 lead.
VCU could've iced the game away earlier, but they struggled from the free throw stripe. The Rams were 14-31 on the line.
ODU dispatches Delaware to move on
Kent Bazemore scored 24 points to lead five players in double figures as Old Dominion downed Delaware 88-74 in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament quarterfinals on Saturday.
The fourth-seeded Monarchs (20-12) will face top-seeded Drexel on Sunday in semifinal action.
Donte Hill had 15 points, Chris Cooper 13, Nick Wright 12 and Dimitri Batten 10 for the Monarchs.
Old Dominion opened the second half with a 13-4 run, fueled by Bazemore's third field goal from beyond the arc and a layup by Cooper, to take a 60-46 lead at the 14:01 mark. Following a jumper by Delaware's Devon Saddler, the Monarchs opened up their largest lead of the game at 78-60 on a thunderous dunk by Marquel De Lancey with 7:21 remaining in the contest.
The Monarchs won the battle of the boards 44-32.
Saddler had 24 points to lead the fifth-seeded Blue Hens (18-13). Highland Springs product Jarvis Threatt poured in 12 points off the bench.
Top seeded Drexel cruises over UNC-Wilmington
The Drexel Dragons showed why they are the #1 overall seed at the Coliseum on Saturday. Chris Fouch had 14 points to pace four double-figure scorers, leading Drexel to a dominating win over UNC Wilmington 59-47 on Saturday.
Samme Givens and Frantz Massenat added 11 points apiece and Damion Lee poured in 10 for Drexel (26-5), which extended its winning streak to 18 straight games. The Dragons have won 24 of their last 25 overall.
The game was tight for most of the first half, until Fouch had a jumper and a layup that helped fuel an 8-2 Drexel run that put the Dragons up for good. They led by five points at the break and outscored the ninth-seeded Seahawks 32-25 in the second half to seal it.
Donte Morales had 13 points to lead UNC Wilmington (10-21).
