RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – A University of Richmond football player was arraigned today in connection with a Saturday night car crash.

Richmond Police say James L. "Jimmy" Speros, Jr., 21, is accused of hit and run causing personal injury, a Class 5 felony. Speros is a redshirt sophomore offensive lineman for the Spiders.

In a brief appearance, Speros told a judge he planned to hire his own attorney. He's due back in court March 19. He did not comment following the arraignment.

According to a crash report obtained Wednesday morning by NBC12, Speros and at least one passenger, teammate Mark T. Speir, 21, were headed south on Charles Street at approximately 9:09 p.m. Saturday when Speros failed to stop at a stop sign. The Speros vehicle then collided with another vehicle headed east on Patterson Avenue, according to police. The impact forced the other vehicle, a Nissan SUV, into a retaining wall at a dentist's office. Its occupants, a man and a woman, suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to police. The Speros vehicle crashed into a utility pole.

Two of the three people in the Speros vehicle were unhurt, according to police. The third occupant's name was not released. Police say one of the passengers was taken to a local hospital by personal vehicle.

Speros left the scene on foot before officers arrived, according to Richmond Police. His arrest warrant was executed at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday. When asked, via e-mail, if Richmond Police could provide an explanation as to why the warrant was executed Wednesday when the crash occurred Saturday night, a police spokesperson replied, "No".

Police did not comment when asked if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

A spokesperson for the UR Athletics Department declined comment, but referred NBC12 to the student-athlete code of conduct which states, "Any student-athlete charged with a felony crime will be immediately suspended from intercollegiate athletic participation and will thereafter be eligible only upon subsequent determination by the Director of Athletics."

According to his bio on the UR football team's web site, Jimmy Speros is the son of Jim Speros, a Super Bowl winning coach with the Washington Redskins from 1982-1984, and later, a coach with the Buffalo Bills. The elder Speros accompanied his son at this morning's court appearance in Richmond.

Earlier this week, Jimmy Speros was released from custody on a $3,500 unsecured bond, according to the Richmond Sheriff's Office.

Speros will be hiring an attorney. His next court date is scheduled for March 19th at 9:30 a.m.
