EF-0 tornado confirmed in Mathews County Friday

MATHEWS COUNTY, VA (WWBT) - The National Weather Service confirmed that a relatively weak tornado touched down Friday evening in Mathews County.

The official report ranks the twister as an EF-0 with winds between 70 and 80 miles per hour.

Several buildings were damaged in Bavon, an area in the southern part of the county, but there were no injuries in Mathews.

Friday's storms are also being blamed for a death in Goochland County.

The Goochland Sheriff's Office says 56-year-old Javier Hernandez was killed when a huge gust of wind knocked a tree over on top of him.

The accident happened around 1:00 p.m. On Hill Point Road, in the lower Tuckahoe subdivision.

Hernandez, who is from Henrico, was doing landscape work at a home when the accident happened.
