RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Petersburg City Council has decided to allow the City Manager to remain in his position, domestic violence charges.

In a special meeting Friday morning, the Council decided to delay any action against William Johnson until a court rules on his charges.

Johnson's wife filed a criminal complaint against his this past weekend. In the complaint, Johnson is accused of punching his wife in the nose, grabbing her by the hair, thrusting her head into the floor, and punching her in the stomach. Johnson is charged with assault on a family member and his trial date is set for April 23.

Johnson and his wife arrived at the meeting together, holding hands.

Despite the criminal charge against him, Johnson will continue to serve as city manager.

Johnson was appointed by City Council less than a year ago after an extensive search.
