PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - Petersburg's Mayor is calling a special meeting of the City Council Friday morning to discuss the City Manager, following his arrest on domestic assault charges.
William Johnson is accused of beating his wife. He appeared in front of a judge Wednesday and had a trial date set for April. If convicted, Johnson faces a maximum penalty of one year behind bars and a $2,500 fine.
The Mayor set the discussion of the City Manger's performance for Friday Feb. 24 at 9:00 a.m. in the Petersburg Multi-Modal Center conference room on the second floor. It is anticipated that Council will have this discussion in closed session.
Despite the charge -- Johnson continues to serve as City Manager for Petersburg. Special arrangements were made for Johnson to enter and exit the courthouse and avoid the media.
