PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - The city manger of Petersburg is arrested and charged with assault on a family member.

William Johnson is accused of beating his wife -- she filed an extensive complaint with police. According to the criminal complaint, a day-long argument between Johnson and his wife turned violent.

The city manager is accused of grabbing his wife, throwing her to the floor, and punching her multiple times. According to court records the assault happened at the couple's Petersburg home on Saturday night.

The complaint indicates the couple was arguing.

Johnson's wife accused him of "cheating." Johnson called the accusation "false."

According to the complaint during a phone conversation Johnson said, "you <expletive> don't call my phone .... You and your son get the <expletive> out."

Johnson returned to the home. His wife called police. She claims he told her, "since you want to call police I'll give you a reason."

The criminal complaint claims Johnson "punched his wife in the nose, grabbed her by the hair, thrust her head into the floor, and punched her in the stomach."

Johnson is out of jail on $5,000 bond. He's scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning.

The city released a statement saying, "Petersburg city council is aware of the situation facing city manager William Johnson, but council has not met to discuss the issue. Until such time as city council does meet, Mr. Johnson will continue to work as city manager of Petersburg. The matter has been referred to Petersburg's acting city attorney, William Hefty."

Johnson was appointed city manager by city council in June 2011.
