We all have our guilty pleasures that we buy -- even knowing they cost more than they should. But how much is too much? NBC12's discount diva will open your eyes to the mark-ups on products we buy every day, and how you can avoid paying the price.

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – This auction gives a whole new meaning to a hot sale. Everything you're looking at was confiscated by the Richmond Police Department.

"Unfortunately, it has been collected by people accused of stealing this property from other people in the city of Richmond or surrounding areas," said Mark Motley, President of Motley's Auction.

Once the case is over, items are returned to the rightful owners, but sometimes there's no owner to be found and this equipment can't sit around indefinitely in the evidence room.

"Once it reaches a certain maturity then it's brought to an auction to be sold at public sale," he said.

For more than 20 years, Motley's has been the clearing house for the Richmond Police Department. This auction features computer accessories, lawnmowers, even a catalytic converter, but the majority of the evidence is a contractor's dream come true.

"We've got a variety of power tools from circular saws to stereo equipment, we've got contractor's electrical components many of which are brand new, hand tools, electronics, speakers, we even have a crystal chandelier," Motley said.

So how much could you expect to save?

"It is hard to determine, something that once sold for a hundred dollars, you may be able to buy for five or ten. Something that's maybe five hundred, maybe $50 or $75, but sometimes it brings a lot more," he stated.

This is an online auction, but if you want to get your hands on the merchandise on the block, Motley's will open its doors next Tuesday so you can get a closer look.

Bidding will close February 22nd at 3 p.m. You have to register to see the full list of what's going on the auction block.
