Varina girls among teams to win district semifinals

MECHANICSVILLE, VA (WWBT) - Lee-Davis may have been hosting the Capital District Tournaments, but the Confederate girls were the road team Wednesday night, and L-D could not get an upset win.

Varina topped Lee-Davis 69-59, advancing to the Capital District Finals Friday at LDHS.  The Blue Devils will play Highland Springs, who blew out Glen Allen 80-25 in the other semifinal.

In the Dominion District, L.C. Bird outlasted Cosby 49-43.  The Skyhawks will play Monacan Friday night at Clover Hill High School.  The Chiefs, the top seed in the district, beat Huguenot 66-52.

Also on the girls side, top seed Meadowbrook blew out Petersburg 70-29. In the 2-3 semifinal, Thomas Dale fell to Prince George 55-37. The Monarchs will play the Lady Royals for the fourth time this season, and the second time in a week, Friday at Matoaca High School at 5:45.

There was one set of boys semifinals in the Central Region Wednesday night. In the Colonial District top seed John Marshall blew out 5 seed Douglas Freeman 74-52, and second seeded Thomas Jefferson took care of third seeded Deep Run 60-49. The Justices and Vikings will play Friday night for the tournament championship at Douglas Freeman High School.

The rest of the Central Region semifinals will take place Thursday.
