RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -- A handgun was found Wednesday on a male student at Lucille Brown Middle School in Richmond.

Police say a 12-year-old male 6th grade student had a handgun in his possession. The gun was not loaded. That student voluntarily gave the gun up to police when they arrived just before noon today. That student has now been charged with possession of a concealed weapon and is at the Juvenile Detention Center in Richmond.

No shots were fired.

This middle school was on lock down when this all started around 11:30 Wednesday morning. The school stayed on lock down for three hours until the students school were dismissed early as a precaution.

At 11:35 Richmond Public School Officials say students inside the school told administrators that a male student in 6th grade had a handgun inside the school. Administrators took the gun away from the him.

It's still unclear just where the 12-year-old got the gun. Preliminary reports are he found the firearm on or around the school itself.

Tonight, parents, and even some teachers, are questioning whether the school was really on lockdown. "According to my daughters, they were never told they were on lockdown," said parent of 2 Maria Ramos.

Maria Ramos also wasn't happy that she didn't know about the gun until hours later. "To find out when school is over that this took place early in the day, it's nerve-racking."

School leaders say they called parents to let them know what happened. They also sent home a letter with students at the end of the day, in case parents didn't receive the calls.

We've been told there will be extra security Thursday at the school. We've uncovered that means random bag checks inside the school.
