VCU suffers heart-wrenching loss to Mason

FAIRFAX, VA (WWBT) - On Valentine's Day, George Mason's Sherrod Wright ripped out the collective heart of the VCU Rams and trampled all over it. Wright hit a long 3-pointer at the buzzer Tuesday night, giving Mason a 62-61 over the Rams.

After VCU's Briante Weber made 1 of 2 free throws with 3.8 seconds remaining, Wright dribbled downcourt and swished a 30-footer, leading to a raucous Patriot Center celebration.

Ryan Pearson scored 24 points to lead the Patriots (22-6, 14-2), who have won 10 of 11 and remain in a tie for first in the CAA with Drexel, which beat William & Mary 63-61 earlier Tuesday.

Bradford Burgess and Troy Daniels scored 13 points apiece to lead the Rams (22-6, 13-3), whose 11-game winning streak came to an end.

VCU held a four point lead with 11 seconds left, but Vertrail Vaughns hit a three to close the gap to one.  Briante Weber was fouled with 2.4 seconds left, and hit one of two free throws.

George Mason and VCU will play again in 10 days at the Siegel Center, to close out the regular season.
