RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - For his heroics VCU's Bradford Burgess was named the CAA player of the week.
The Benedictine product averaged 23.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 2.5 assists per game in VCU's 2-0 week. The senior guard posted back-to-back 20-point efforts for the first time this year with a team-best 22 points in a 66-43 win over Towson and a season-high 24 points in a 68-64 triumph at ODU. Burgess shot 51.9% from the floor, including 11-of-20 from 3-point range.
Highland Springs product Jarvis Threatt was named the CAA Co-Rookie of the Week. the Delaware guard averaged 13.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists as Delaware increased its winning streak to four last week. The freshman guard had a team-high 19 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals in an 80-77 overtime victory at Georgia State and contributed eight points and five boards in a 71-53 win over UNCW. He's sharing the honor with Drexel's Damion Lee.
Drexel, George Mason and VCU sit atop the CAA with 13-2 league marks with three conference games remaining. Drexel defeated James Madison and Hofstra last week and has won 13 straight CAA games after an 0-2 start. VCU topped Towson and Old Dominion and has gone 11-0 in CAA play since dropping consecutive games in early January. Mason beat Hofstra and UNCW and improved to 27-2 in its last 29 CAA contests. All three teams have clinched first-round byes for the Virginia 529 CAA Men's Basketball Championship. Old Dominion, Delaware and Georgia State are still battling for the final bye. VCU and Mason meet twice in the final 11 days of the season, starting with a 9 p.m. matchup on Tuesday in Fairfax.
VCU received two votes in this week's Associated Press Poll, the first time they've showed up in that poll this season.
