Ettrick, VA (WWBT)- Virginia State men's basketball started out the season losing 13 of its first 14 games, but has found new life in the second half of the season. Since January 12, the Trojans have won five of nine games, and locked up their third straight victory on Monday night facing CIAA rival Elizabeth City State.
Kenny Mitchell scored a career-high 28 points and was 10-for-10 from the floor, leading Virginia State to a 78-75 win over the Vikings. The Trojans led by as many as eleven points in the first half and held a seven point advantage at halftime. Elizabeth City would charge back in the second and take its first lead of the game at the 6:09 mark, but VSU would take the lead back and hold on for the three point victory.
Mitchell led three Trojans in double figures. Daniel Awosanya scored 14 points and Mike Bynum chipped in 12. Virginia State shot 50 percent from the floor during the contest, including 64 percent in the first half.
Virginia State improves to 6-17, 5-7 in the CAA. The Trojans are back in action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Bowie State.
