Richmond, VA (WWBT)- Saturday saw former VCU basketball standout Brandon Rozzell sign a contract with the Lasaulec Aris Tigers in Holland as he'll embark on a hopeful pro basketball career overseas. The team competes in the country's top division. NBC12 caught up with the former Ram sharp-shooter on Sunday afternoon as he was making his last minute preparations to depart.
Rozzell signed with the Tigers as a shooting guard and will join a team looking to make a second half push. The squad is nearly halfway through its season and will look to Rozzell to provide an extra boost. The former Ram is only signed with the team through the end of the season and will be in Holland for 3-4 months before returning stateside. His hope is to make a good impression so that he will be signed by a European club next season and hopes to grow into a premier player.
One thing Rozzell is trying to get ready for is being separated from his fiancee and six month old son for the stretch. He'll return to the Richmond area after the season and says that if he signs with another team for next season, he'll take his family with him. Rozzell has confided in Jamal Shuler, another former VCU hoops player who has put together a career overseas. Shuler has gone through many of the same experiences that Rozzell is about to go through, including being away from his young family while playing basketball in Europe.
Rozzell will depart for The Netherlands on Monday evening. Click on the video to view the extended interview with former VCU guard Brandon Rozzell.
