Suspect escapes after trying to carjack taxi driver

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Richmond Police are looking for a man they say held up a taxi diver at gunpoint.

The cab driver says he was going to pick up a customer on the 1900 block of Hopkins road in south Richmond. That's near Kingly Ones apartments. He says the man jumped in and pulled out a gun.

It was a scary night for one Richmond man who thought he was picking up a client around 7:30Thursday night. However, that customer had a different motive.

When the suspect got into the car, he demanded the man to drive at gunpoint. When he didn't do what he was told, the suspect managed to move over towards the driver's side, put his foot on the petal, and floored it about a block to the intersection of Hopkins and Cofer roads where he hit two cars waiting at the light. That's when he got out of the car and ran back towards the apartments. Police say he left behind a BB gun.

"I don't think that's good," said neighbor, Frederick Giles. "That's an evil act, and it's almost like you don't care."

Giles says he saw dozens of police cars lined up here along Cofer road.  They're looking for a man in his 20's, who was wearing a black hoodie and black football jacket at the time.

"When I saw that, I knew something was up," Giles added. "Usually things like that don't happen around here. It's usually peaceful and quite. Everyone minds their own business."

Officers say the victim, who was driving a van, is not registered with a taxi company. They say he uses his personal car for his service.
