RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - School Board member in Suffolk say they aren't backing down on the issue of banning cross dressing in schools.
If the ban passes, boys will not be able to wear girls clothes to school and vice versa.
The board took up the issue at a meeting Thursday night. Only one board member expressed doubt about changing the dress code. A transgendered person also spoke at the meeting, asking the board to reconsider the ban. Board members say they feel cross dressers are a distraction to students and fear they would be easy targets.
Civil liberties groups feel the same way, saying students have a right to express themselves. They also say the proposed ban is too vague.
The ACLU says the ban will violate federal law; the city attorney will look into that.
