Treating scabies

MECHANICSVILLE, VA (WWBT) - Dr. Ruth Latham is treating scabies, an infection caused by little mites.

Symptoms include itching, red bumps or blisters, small lines near the lesions (burrows).  They show up between fingers, folds elbow,wrist and knees, waist, genitals, bottoms of feet, armpits and upper thigh.

It is treated with elimite cream and antihistamines for itching.  See your family medicine physician for evaluation and treatment.

Avoid contact with infected individuals.   If you are exposed you should contact your physician to start treatment.  Place exposed linens, toys (stuffed animals/dolls), and clothing in plastic for three days, wash with hot water, place in a hot dryer or dry clean.
