Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Are you getting ready for the Monument Avenue 10K? Is it your first time running a distance of that length?

Dr. Larry Benson at CJW Sports Medicine is warning new runners about Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome.

This is marked by pain on the insides of the lower leg during and after running.  It happens often to the over ambitious who are starting to run for the first time.

Icing the lower leg at any sign of pain is important.  Anti-inflammatory meds and rest can be helpful. If pain is present longer than 2-3 days after a run or if pain is very severe when running, you should follow up with a physician that is familiar treating these injuries.

Proper shoe wear is very important.  Every shoe advertised on the market is not made for every foot. Proper stretching and warm up is important.
