RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation is halting grants to Planned Parenthood.
The Komen Foundation is the nation's leading breast-cancer charity. Now that it is cutting off Planned Parenthood, there is a bitter rift between two iconic organizations that have helped millions of women.
This is all linked to the national abortion debate. Planned Parenthood says Komen is bowing to pressure from anti-abortion groups.
Komen says the cutoff is because Planned Parenthood is under investigation by Congress.
Planned Parenthood has come under increasing scrutiny from Conservative lawmakers over how it provides abortion services. It says funding from Komen has largely paid for breast exams at local centers, getting as much as $680,000 in 2011.
Planned Parenthood says it now has an emergency fund that will go towards making up for lost funds from Komen.
