SHORT PUMP, VA (WWBT) - Family and friends are reflecting on the loss of Matt Geary. There was no question that one time local prosecutor was going through a rough patch, but those close to him were certain that he was getting his life back on track.
Alan Lane is among those struggling to come to terms with the loss of a good friend.
"I still don't understand, I'm shocked, I'm hurt," he said. "We lost somebody that was very, very important in our community.
Lane has known Geary for close to 15 years. He started as a client and the two quickly became friends. He coached several of Geary's children in sports and is concerned about the family his friend left behind.
When asked how the family is coping, a tearful lane could only reply. "I can't imagine, I can't imagine."
Despite the adversity that Geary had dealt with the final months of his life, his friend is hopeful that people will be reminded of the good work he had accomplished in the community. Geary was a successful prosecutor, who helped convict the accused killer in the horrific Harvey murders of 2006
He also had built a strong relationship with many in the law enforcement community. Many of the men and woman in "blue" considered Geary to be one of their own.
Lane hopes that Geary's death will perhaps help someone else dealing with difficulty.
"Love God first, love your family and if you have any problems or anything make sure your tell somebody," he said.
It is a lesson that could apply to anyone, regardless how prominent they may be in a community.
The medical examiner has yet to release the full report on the cause of Matt Geary's death. The local attorney and politician left behind five children.
