CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Just after 8:00 Sunday night a loud boom shook the region, alarming a lot of families who thought it may have been an earthquake or some type of explosion.
Chesterfield authorities say it was a planned event at the southern landfill, just off Iron Bridge Road.
A county resident brought in something that looked like an explosive.
Apparently the resident found it while cleaning out his home.
The landfill called police, and with the assistance of the fire department, state police, and the bomb squad, authorities safely discarded the device by blowing it up.
