RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - If you have already filed your taxes- your refund may take longer than anticipated --- to arrive. The IRS is experiencing a few problems with its system. We've been getting calls for the last two days from early filers who say they have not received their refund. Many even thought they were being scammed by a tax service, but tonight we uncover the bad news starts at the top- with the IRS.
Lolita Brown-Wilson filed her taxes the first day she was allowed- January 17th. She filed with Instant Tax Service, which has locations all around metro Richmond.
"They told me that it would be back on January the 26th," said Brown-Wilson
That day came and went.
"I feel like I'm getting the runaround."
An employee of Instant Tax Service says they've had a lot of angry customers at their door. "We've been having a lot of issues that's why we had to get a security guard in here, because people are trying to like threaten us. like you know if you don't have my money something bad's going to happen to you," said Ivan Giron.
The IRS is taking the blame for this one.
NBC12 obtained an alert from the IRS, telling tax preparers around the country "taxpayers will receive refunds approximately one week later than initial projections." The agency blames new safeguards put in place this year against refund fraud.
Lolita Brown-Wilson doesn't mind the extra wait. She just wishes her tax preparer had told her. "I shouldn't have to do a lot of running around doing a lot of calling trying to find information on my taxes when I paid a tax preparer to handle that."
The instant tax service location we visited on brook road has signs posted on the door telling customers about the problem. The IRS is also apologizes for the inconvenience.
If you filed in the last two weeks, the IRS says your tax refund will not arrive until at least January 31st and possibly not until February 4th.
