RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -
A bid to repeal Virginia's so-called "King's Dominion Rule" failed its first test at the General Assembly.
The bill would give "all" local school districts the option of starting the school year prior to Labor Day.
But a Senate panel killed the measure, bowing to pressure from the tourism industry.
Despite that, Henrico Democrat Joe Morrissey stood in favor of repealing the King's Dominion rule...saying theme parks and other tourist attractions shouldn't get involved.
"And that is the elected school boards, and superintendents that ought to be making the decision, and not Tweety Bird, and not Scooby Doo, and not Spongebob, and not Bugs Bunny that make educational policy in the Commonwealth," said Del. Joe Morrissey, (D) Henrico.
Even though the repeal effort failed in a Senate committee today, there's still another version that's being debated in the House of Delegates.
