Construction kick-off ceremony for new Huguenot High School

Richmond is a step closer to opening its first new high school in 40 years!

Thursday afternoon  Mayor Dwight Jones and other city leaders held a "construction kick-off" ceremony - for the new Huguenot High School on Forest Hill Avenue.

This wasn't a typical ground-breaking because instead of using shovels to symbolize the kickoff -- crews used torches to begin tearing down the water tower.

"We promised 4 news schools and now 3 years in, this is the 4th groundbreaking we've had on new schools in the city of Richmond in the last 3 years," said Mayor Dwight Jones.

The new school will be built in its place.

The "new" Huguenot High School is set to open in January 2015.

The mayor said he was especially excited for this new era - because all three of his kids graduated from Huguenot High.
