RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A gas leak near a Church Hill neighborhood forced emergency responders to evacuate several homes.
Firefighters and public works crews responded to the leak around 1:00 this morning.
Utility crews turned off the gas for about an hour while they repaired the line.
Firefighters even evacuated people while crews worked, but everyone was able to go back into their homes an hour later around 2:00.
We spoke to one man who was walking along the street who says he smelled the gas between 27th and 31st street. He also explains what he saw coming up from the street. That's when he called police right away.
"It was bubbling in cracks in the ground. It was bubbling a whole lot. I was confused why it was so thick. The bubbling was too thick. It couldn't have been water because it would have shot through the ground so I kind of figured it was gas," David Taylor said.
Taylor did say fire crews told some people to turn off their gas stoves or heat if they have gas just for safety reasons.
