Jury recommends life sentence for Hanover man

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - New information in the case of a Hanover man who killed his good friend and neighbor last summer.

A jury is recommending that Michael Finney spend the rest of his life in prison for the deadly shooting of Robert Locklear at his home in the 11,000 block of Dude Ranch Road.

The jury took into account Michael Finney's violent criminal past. That includes a time when he shot his wife in the foot and another when he assaulted his stepmother.

Finney was found guilty of first degree murder in the death of Robert Locklear.

Back in July, the two friends and their families were at a gathering when they started arguing. Finney then went into the house, got a shotgun, came out on the porch and shot Locklear.

According to the Times Dispatch, Locklear's 10-year-old daughter testified that her father begged Finney not to shoot him in front of her.

Finney testified that he had as many as 20 beers that day.

Finney will be formally sentenced to life in prison on march 27th.

He faces an additional three years behind bars for using that shot gun.
