RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - In a surprise decision, Governor Bob McDonnell put the brakes on what was expected to be a heated debate in the General Assembly over uranium mining.
Virginia Uranium Inc. wants to mine a 119 million pound deposit in Pittsylvania County; they are asking the state to lift the 60 year old moratorium.
But McDonnell said he'd like to retain the ban, because there is still quite a bit to learn.
"We went over it with people on my team and decided that this was the next prudent course, to draft regulations, to do some site specific research at Cole field and then to come back in a year and try and determine wether we should move forward." said Governor McDonnell.
He called for a new multi-agency group to conducts a comprehensive study on the issue.
