RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A young man will be remembered after being shot and killed Saturday night.
Police say it appears to be the city's first murder of the year.
We're not even two weeks into January and police are already investigating a homicide this year. The police department just announced those violent crimes appeared to be on the decline.
Officers confirm 21-year-old De'Shawn Mayo was found lying on the ground in the 600 block of Woodhaven Drive in south Richmond.
Emergency crews responded and rushed him to VCU Medical Center where he later died.
Friends and family are coming together Thursday evening at 6 p.m. in the 600 block of Woodhaven Drive off Red Oak Lane.
Last year, police recorded 37 homicides in the city. Their goal is to make that number even lower this year.
Police have no suspects right now.
If you have any information that could help lead police to an arrest, call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
