Confederate flag sparking controversy in Lexington

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A controversy over the display of the Confederate Flag is cropping up again in Lexington.

The Lexington City Council voted in favor banning the flag last year. That ban includes keeping the Sons of Confederate Veterans from flying rebel flags on Lee-Jackson day on January 13.

The group says it's working to file a formal complaint before then.

The organization will file a lawsuit as soon as next week challenging the city council ordinance. But that's not all, they also plan to display the flags by having members hold them under flagpoles in downtown Lexington.

Brandon Dorsey is leading the effort and claims the group is doing it in honor of the memory of the fallen Confederate soldiers.

"A lot of them will be in uniform...which I think proves the point why we are here, we are about the soldiers, nothing else." said Dorsey.

Lexington's City Manager is aware about the display planned for Lee-Jackson day and said as long as they are not blocking the sidewalks, there should be no issue.
