RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Henrico Police have made an arrest in an assault and attempted carjacking case that unfolded in Short Pump over the holiday weekend.
Daniel Wolfrey, 38, of Bumpass, was arrested Monday night and charged with attempted carjacking, abduction and sexual battery, according to Henrico Police.
Authorities say the incident took place in the Brookhollow Shopping Center on West Broad Street around 10 p.m. Friday.
Officers say the man forced his way into the woman's car and told her to give him her keys. Police say she then fought back with her hands and feet, getting herself free while the suspect took off in a different vehicle.
Henrico Police immediately contacted media outlets requesting assistance in identifying the suspect based on surveillance photos from a nearby business. Although many tips were received, police say the break in the case came Monday when Wolfrey and a family member went to police headquarters to inquire as to why he was pictured on the news. After a brief interview, police say Wolfrey confessed to the offenses.
"The time that the offense took was probably 60 seconds. And that 60 seconds, he negatively impacted the lives of two individuals. His own, obviously, as well as the victim, probably for the rest of their lives," said Henrico Police Lt. Eric Owens.
It remained unexplained why Wolfrey first questioned the surveillance photograph before apparently confessing.
"We appreciate the fact that he did. It makes the job of crime fighting that much easier," Owens said.
