Sheriff's deputy terminated after inmate assault charge

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The following is a press release from the Richmond Sherrif's Department.

Sheriff C.T. Woody, Jr. announced today that following the completion of an internal investigation into accusations of assault of a jail resident by Deputy Jermaine Dove, his employment with the Sheriff's Office was terminated.

On December 5, 2011 Jermaine Dove, 37, was arrested for misdemeanor assault of a resident at the Richmond City Jail. At approximately 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, November 29, 2011, a verbal altercation took place in a housing unit between Dove and a jail resident. The deputy removed the resident from his housing unit without an order to do so---a violation of jail policy. No serious medical attention was required of either person.

Based upon the findings of the preliminary internal investigation, a warrant was obtained from the magistrate for Dove's arrest for the charge of assault and battery (18.2-57), a Class 1 misdemeanor. Following his arrest Dove was suspended without pay. Following the conclusion of the internal investigation, Dove was terminated, with cause. Jermaine Dove is due to appear in court on January 5, 2012.
