MIDLOTHIAN, VA - At the request of State Coordinating Officer Michael Cline, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has extended the deadline for renters, homeowners and business owners in Louisa County who suffered damage from the August 23 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks to register for state and federal disaster assistance.
The new deadline is Monday March 5, 2012.
Assistance to individuals can include grants to help pay for temporary housing needs, essential home repairs and other serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance or other sources.
Earthquake survivors can register for aid, get information about assistance programs and follow up on their applications by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 800-462-7585 for those with speech or hearing impairments. Multi-lingual operators are available to answer calls. Telephone registration is available daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
On a Web-enabled mobile device or smartphone at m.fema.gov.
With 711 or Video Relay Service (VRS) by calling 1-800-621-3362.
By visiting the Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) located at the Triangle Plaza, 502 E. Main St., Suite 6000 (former Video 2000 store), in Louisa between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday. The DRC will reopen after the holidays, January 5, 2011.
"We request that if you have previously registered with FEMA to let them know of any changes you may have made since registering. This would include an address change or relocation," Federal Coordinating Officer Don Keldsen said. "If you do have changes please contact FEMA so we can update your registration information."
Applicants are reminded to keep their FEMA information updated, but not to register twice. Duplicate registrations will delay processing an application.
